GREY CONFEDERATE ARMY CIVIL WAR STYLE KEPI

Influenced by the old French army headgear, The American version of the kepi featured a squared off leather brim and chin strap.
Not to be confused with the similar looking forage cap, the kepi was made of stiffer materials and thus much better at retaining it's shape. While the "feed bag shaped" forage cap was more common, especially amoung volunteers on both sides, the kepi was standard issue amoung many regulars. After the American Civil War, it was the style of headgear used in some form until 1902 [granted in union blue].
The modern day field cap, in a way, is a direct descendant from the flat topped kepi.
